About This Guide

Voter ID Card (officially Elector's Photo Identity Card or EPIC) is issued by Election Commission of India to enable voting in elections. Mandatory document for casting votes in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Assembly, and local body elections. Also widely accepted as identity and address proof for various services. Apply online via NVSP (National Voter Services Portal) at https://www.nvsp.in or Voter Helpline App. e-EPIC introduced in 2021 - downloadable digital voter ID card valid as physical card. Form 6 for new registration, Form 8 for corrections, Form 7 for objections.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Follow these steps in order. Each step is critical - skip none.

Visit NVSP Portal

Go to https://www.nvsp.in - National Voters' Services Portal. Click "Login/Register" if first time. Or use Voter Helpline App (better mobile experience).

For new users: Click "Don't have account? Register" → Mobile + email + captcha → OTP verification. Existing: Login with mobile + OTP.

Click "Form 6 - New Voter Registration"

On dashboard, find "Apply Online" → "Forms" → Form 6 (Application for inclusion of name in electoral roll). Or directly access via Voter Helpline App.

Fill Personal Details

Name (as per Aadhaar), Father/Husband name, DOB, gender, place of birth, present and permanent address. Use exact spellings.

Choose Constituency

Auto-determined by your address PIN code. Verify state, district, constituency name. Wrong constituency = rejection. Cross-check from earlier elections of your area.

Upload Documents

Upload photo (clear, recent, white background, 200×230 px max 100 KB), identity proof, address proof, age proof. PDF/JPG format. Each document max 2 MB.

Verify Aadhaar (Optional)

Aadhaar linkage encouraged for verification but not mandatory. If linked, your registration is faster as ECI verifies through UIDAI directly.

Self-Declaration

Declare: Indian citizen, ordinary resident of given address, not registered elsewhere, of sound mind. False declaration leads to penalty + rejection.

Submit and Note Reference Number

Submit application. You receive Application Reference Number (e.g., NVSP/2026/XXXXXX). Save this - critical for tracking and any followup.

BLO Visit and Verification

Booth Level Officer (BLO) visits your address within 30 days for physical verification. Have documents ready. After verification, EPIC issued in 30-60 days. Download e-EPIC from NVSP. Physical card delivered separately.

What Happens After Application?

Track status at nvsp.in → "Track Application Status" with reference number. After approval, EPIC issued. Download e-EPIC from NVSP - this is legally valid as physical card. Physical EPIC delivered by post in 30-60 days. If not received, contact local Election Office. Keep voter ID safe - lost card costs nothing to reissue. Update address whenever you move (Form 8). Use voter ID at polling station with assigned booth ID.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'll be 18 in next 6 months, can I apply now?

Apply when you turn 18 OR if you'll be 18 on January 1, April 1, July 1, or October 1 of next year. ECI revised qualifying dates to allow more flexibility from 2023.

Voter ID and Aadhaar both needed?

Both are separate documents. Voter ID for voting and ID/address proof. Aadhaar mainly for unique identification. Linking voter ID with Aadhaar is voluntary but recommended.

Voter ID lost - how to get duplicate?

Submit Form EPIC-002 at nvsp.in or local Election Office. Provide reference details, address proof. Free reissue. e-EPIC downloadable anytime from NVSP if you have EPIC number.

Multiple voter IDs - what to do?

Having multiple voter IDs is illegal. Use Form 7 to remove your name from old constituency. Then update at new constituency via Form 6. Failure = legal action.

Can NRI vote?

Yes, NRIs can register as Overseas Voters via Form 6A. Need to physically come to constituency to vote (no postal/online voting yet). Discussion ongoing for proxy/online voting.
