About This Guide

Indian Passport is issued by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) through Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). Required for international travel. Normal Passport: 36-page (₹1,500) or 60-page (₹2,000), processing time 30-45 days. Tatkal Passport: Same fees + ₹2,000 surcharge, faster processing 7-15 days. Apply online at passportindia.gov.in. Step-by-Step Application Process

Follow these steps in order. Each step is critical - skip none.

Visit https://www.passportindia.gov.in. Click "Register Now". Provide name, DOB, email, mobile. Activation link sent to email - click to activate within 15 days.

Login with credentials. Click "Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport". For first time = Fresh. Already had passport = Re-issue.

Fill Application Form Online

Two options: (1) Online filling (recommended) - fill 9 sections directly on portal (2) Download e-Form, fill offline, upload. Online is faster and saves errors.

Choose Normal vs Tatkal

Normal: ₹1,500 (36 pg) / ₹2,000 (60 pg), 30-45 days. Tatkal: Same + ₹2,000 surcharge, 7-15 days. Tatkal needs additional documents (3 from list of 14). Choose Normal unless urgent.

Provide Personal Details

Name (as per Aadhaar), gender, DOB, place of birth, marital status, parents names, spouse name (if married), educational qualifications, present and permanent address.

Other Details Section

Citizenship status, criminal proceedings (declare any), previous passport details (if applicable), reference details (2 references with phone in same area).

Upload Documents (Optional Step)

Some documents can be pre-uploaded (Aadhaar, photo). However, all originals MUST be carried at PSK appointment. Pre-upload saves time at appointment.

Pay Application Fee

Pay online via Net banking, Debit/Credit card, UPI. Online payment mandatory. Save payment receipt with ARN (Application Reference Number).

Schedule PSK Appointment

Book appointment at nearest PSK or POPSK. Slots open up to 3 months ahead. Choose date and time. Tatkal slots open daily at 6 PM for next-day. Take printout of appointment confirmation.

Visit PSK on Appointment Day

Reach PSK 15 mins early with: Application receipt, all original documents + 1 photocopy each, Aadhaar, photo. Process takes 1-2 hours - biometric capture, document verification, photo captured, signature.

Police Verification

Post-PSK, police verification at home address within 7-21 days. Be available. Officer asks basic questions, takes neighbor verification. Cooperate - delays rejection.

Passport Dispatch

After successful police verification, passport printed and dispatched by Speed Post in 7-15 days. Track at passportindia.gov.in or India Post. Receive at registered address.

What Happens After Application?

Police verification - what to expect?

Passport not received after 60 days?

Track at passportindia.gov.in. If "Sent for Print" but not received, contact PSK. If police verification adverse - must reapply with affidavit. Use Mobile App for direct PSK communication.

Tatkal vs Normal difference?

Address change after applying?
