Step-by-Step Application Process

Follow these steps in order. Each step is critical - skip none.

Find Your State Portal

Each state has separate ration card portal. Go to nfsa.gov.in → "Ration Card Services" → Select your state. Major portals: UP - fcs.up.gov.in, MH - mahafood.gov.in, TN - tnpds.gov.in, KA - ahara.kar.nic.in.

New user: Register with mobile + OTP. Most states use mobile-based authentication. Some require Aadhaar verification.

Choose Application Type

New Ration Card → Apply (no existing card in family). Add Member → Existing card, new member born/married. Modification → Address/name change. Surrender → Moving to another state.

Fill Family Details

Enter Head of Family details (name, DOB, Aadhaar, occupation). Add ALL family members with relationship, age, Aadhaar. One ration card per family.

Address and Income

Present address with PIN code. Annual family income (be honest - declared in self-declaration). Caste category. Number of dependent children.

Choose Category

Select AAY/PHH/APL based on eligibility (system may auto-suggest). AAY most beneficial - free 35kg ration. PHH gets free 5kg per person. APL pays market rate.

Upload Documents

Upload Aadhaar of ALL family members, address proof, income certificate, family photo, caste certificate. Each PDF/JPG, max 2MB. Clarity is critical.

Pay Fee Online

State-specific fees: ₹5 (UP), ₹10 (TN), ₹15 (Kerala), up to ₹50 in some states. Pay via Net banking/UPI/Debit card. Get receipt.

Submit and Save Reference Number

Submit application. Receive Application Reference Number (ARN) via SMS. Save - critical for status tracking. Acknowledgment receipt to download.

Field Verification

Local Patwari/Mukhtar or Inspector visits home for physical verification within 30 days. Verify family members, household items, living conditions. Cooperate fully.

Card Issuance

After verification approval (30-60 days), digital ration card available on state portal. Physical card delivered through Tehsildar office or available for pickup. Aadhaar-seeded ration cards work for ONORC portability.
