NFSA covers 80 crore Indians (67% rural, 50% urban). Apply online via state-specific portals or NFSA portal nfsa.gov.in. One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) allows portability across India - take ration anywhere.

Follow these steps in order. Each step is critical - skip none.
Track status at state portal with ARN. Once issued, visit nearest Fair Price Shop (Ration Shop) with ration card + Aadhaar for monthly ration. Bring ration bag. ONORC allows getting ration anywhere in India - just need card + Aadhaar at any FPS. Update card whenever family changes (birth, death, marriage). Surrender card if relocating to another state and apply fresh in new state. Keep ration card safe - lost cards reissued for nominal fee.
